Is Elk Rapids, Michigan Worth the Visit? Here’s What You Need to Know!
I have a very close friend who lived in California for many years but always dreamed about moving back to her beloved home town of Elk Rapids, Michigan. Well, she eventually made the move and I finally went to visit her – and I’m so glad I did!
Elk Rapids, Michigan is the hidden gem in Northern Michigan. Elk Rapids is about 250 miles from Detroit and about 320 miles from Chicago. I flew in from Chicago, which was a short 1.5 hour flight. Just over 17 miles from the Traverse City Airport, Elk Rapids is about 2 miles square and has a population of under 2000 people! For such a small place, it sure packs a big punch!
Michigan Geography Lesson
If you’re like me, the geography of that part of Michigan is both very appealing and also a bit confusing. So, here’s the scoop:
Michigan is surrounded by three of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior in the north, Lake Huron in the east, and Lake Michigan in the west and Lake Erie in the south. (Lake Ontario doesn’t touch Michigan, it’s further east, next to New York State.) Did you know that the 5 Great Lakes are the largest fresh water system in the world?
Michigan consists of the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. Elk Rapids is in the Lower Peninsula in the region known as Northwest Michigan. It’s about 17 miles north of Traverse City, which is considered the Cherry Capital of Michigan with a population of about 16,000. That’s huge compared to little Elk Rapids!

Now let me tell you why Elk Rapids is worth it:
Beaches – Many lakeside beaches on the 14 lakes and rivers known as the Chain Of Lakes.
Small Town Charm – Even though this is a tourist area, particularly in the summer, Elk Rapids maintains its’ cozy, everyone-knows-everyone kind of vibe. It’s ideal as one of those great hidden gem weekend getaway spots. It reminds me of Rangeley, Maine.
Hiking, Boating, Water Sports, Winter Sports – This is definitely an outdoor adventure town with activities for the whole family, all year long.
Views – From the sandy shores of the beaches to the hikes in the surrounding hills, there are gorgeous views everywhere.
Food & Wine – There are several wineries in the region and excellent farm to table food options. Be sure to try whitefish – native to the freshwater of the Great Lakes.
Art Community – Elk Rapids is known for being one of Michigan’s hidden gems of art and culture with many galleries and the famous outdoor sculpture Art Walk.
Festivals – The Elk Rapids and Traverse City area are known for their yearly festivals from the world renowned Film Festival to the National Cherry Festival.
Close By – So much to do in the region such as visit Traverse City, Explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and ski or walk the SkyBridge at the Boyne Mountain Ski Resort.
